The Environmental Day Celebration and Inauguration of United Composite PU College’s Eco Club took place on a hot day, accompanied by a cool breeze. The event was held at the college outdoor ground and was graced by the presence of Mr. John Peter Kirubagaran, the Chairman of the college. A 20-hour organic farming course has been initiated starting from August 2023.
To emphasize the significance of environmental awareness, everyone was instructed to dress in green attire, symbolizing their commitment to a sustainable future.
The event commenced with the recitation of the quote, “Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed,” by Mahatma Gandhi. This quote set the tone for the event, emphasizing the importance of responsible environmental stewardship.
Inauguration of the Eco Club:
Mrs. Sherly felicitated the inauguration of the college’s Eco Club, recognizing its vital role in empowering students to promote environmentally friendly behaviors and initiatives. The Eco Club aims to organize seminars, lectures, debates, create awareness, and actively support paper recycling and composting.
Performances
- Sahana from ‘I PUC – PCMB’ mesmerized the audience with her soulful singing, adding a touch of artistic expression to the event.
- Vedashree from ‘II PUC’ delivered an insightful speech, highlighting the significance of environmental conservation and the role that the college and its students can play.
Chairman's Speech
The Chairman addressed the audience and shared several important points: He spoke about the declaration of June 5th as World Environment Day, stemming from the Stockholm Conference on Human Environment held in 1972.
He emphasized the importance of planting green plants to safeguard the environment. He also encouraged learning from European and other nations that prioritize environmental conservation.
He urged everyone to make a commitment to have at least one indoor plant or a miniature garden on their balconies, promoting a green lifestyle. He shared a personal anecdote about rehabilitating a dying papaya tree, which later flourished, symbolizing the rewards of preserving nature.
He mentioned the college’s ongoing efforts to ban plastic on campus. He stressed that the sustainability of the Earth lies in the hands of the individuals present at the event. He concluded his speech by blessing the students and commending their active participation in World Environment Day.
Tree Plantation
The Chairman, along with college dignitaries, planted saplings to signify their dedication to environmental conservation. Orange, sapodilla, and mango saplings were chosen, symbolizing the diversity and richness of nature. The Chairman highlighted that these plantations were done for the glory of God and for the appreciation of the students and staff.
Sustainable Stationery
As a gesture of promoting sustainable practices, the Chairman and dignitaries received sustainable stationery as gifts. These stationery items contained seeds that could be planted after use, further emphasizing the importance of nurturing, and preserving the environment.
Closing Performance and Vote of Thanks
An alumna, Bhavana from UCPUC, concluded the event with a heartfelt performance, leaving the audience inspired. The principal expressed gratitude to all the participants, dignitaries, and attendees, and delivered a vote of thanks, acknowledging their contributions and commitment to environmental conservation.
The Environmental Day Celebration and Inauguration of United Composite PU College’s Eco Club proved to be a memorable event, highlighting the college’s dedication to environmental awareness and sustainability.
The Chairman’s speech, the tree plantation, and the overall enthusiasm of the students showcased their active participation in promoting a greener future. It was an occasion filled with inspiration, education, and a shared commitment to safeguarding our environment for generations to come.
